Identify the roof area and valleys feeding every run. Long runs and concentrated inside-corner flow may need more than one outlet or a shorter path to a downspout.

Overflow directly above an outlet, weak discharge during heavy rain, leaking elbows and persistent water in the gutter can indicate restriction. Debris may collect at the top, in an elbow or downstream.

Trace every proposed downspout to a workable destination
Begin at the roof: identify which gutter run and roof area feed the outlet. Then follow the route through the opening, elbows, vertical downspout, extension or underground adapter to the final discharge. A restriction or poor location anywhere in that chain can undermine the system.
Ground conditions often decide placement. The closest corner may be a low area beside the foundation or may cross a walkway. Landscaping, gates, air-conditioning equipment and property boundaries can limit routes. These constraints should be resolved during the estimate, not improvised at installation.

Planning the work
Specify dimensions, routing and service access
The scope should state outlet and downspout dimensions, elbow count, attachment straps, lower termination and included extension or splash block. If a buried line is reused, ask how it will be tested and who is responsible if it is blocked or damaged.
Where a second outlet is added, the gutter may need a new pitch layout. Confirm high and low points and whether the run drains one direction or toward both ends. A water test should show unobstructed discharge at the final outlet.
